Our last day in Ponta Delgada began bright and early. We gathered in the lobby, ensuring everyone had the right gear. Once all the breakfast boxes were handed out, we boarded the bus and set off for our journey to Terceira, our second and final island.
We arrived at Hotel Cruzeiro and unloaded our luggage before getting ready for our meeting with the mayor. With some rooms still unavailable, the girls shared one room while the guys took another, which made for a fun and lively start to the day.
Everyone had a great time getting ready together in the rooms. Once lunchtime arrived, we enjoyed our tuna sandwiches before heading out to explore the town around Hotel Cruceiro. Though we split into smaller groups, we shared photos of our adventures in the WhatsApp group chat. Some of us wandered through cafés and restaurants, while others explored the marina.
After regrouping at the hotel, we set off together for City Hall, where we had the pleasure of meeting Mayor Meneses. He welcomed us with a tour of the building and delivered a fascinating speech on the history of the Azores. Among the stories he shared were how Portugal became a republic, the escape of a fleeing king, and the deep-rooted tribal identity of each island. He also took the time to answer our questions, whether they were about history or sparked by something intriguing we noticed in the room. After our conversation, we split into our four student groups. Two focused on capturing B-roll, while the other two set up in a separate room to film Mayor Meneses’ interview for the documentary.
We left Town Hall shortly after 4:30 p.m. and returned to the hotel, where all of our rooms were finally ready. With that, we moved our luggage into the correct rooms. Many of us jumped straight into logging our footage so we could enjoy a more relaxed evening and focus on making our exciting dinner plans become a reality.
With a productive day behind us, we look forward to the adventures still to come, excited for what the island has in store. Thanks for followingus along on our journey! This is just the beginning.
