Day five marked our final day of production. We started the day at breakfast at our hotel, and discussed the feature of our team in the newspaper of a local Azorean publication, Jornal Açoriano Oriental.

Before heading out for the day, we delegated segments of our stories based on research and interview information into our three acts that we will edit once returning to New York.

Breaking into our teams, we all dispersed through Angra do Heroismo to film various important subjects of b-roll, including the picturesque streets, flags, landmarks, churches, and other significant indicators of the region.

Breaking for lunch, a majority of the team grabbed a quick bite at the cafe Sandoxa and Companhia. After the short break, the team returned to the hotel to board the bus and headed to the first shoot location; Escola Secundaria Tomas de Borba, a school where we met Professor Lazaro Silva. Following the warm welcome from the professor, we interviewed him and two of his young students, Santiago Toste and Constança Santo. Both of whom have been playing the viola da terra for years, and expressed their connection to the instrument and its traditional significance in their interviews.

The interviews continued as we then headed to Angra do Heroísmo Interpretive Center, where 7 string players displayed their knowledge of the instruments’ history and the major differences between them.  One of the players, Osvaldo Lima actually spent his birthday with us after his rendition of a Metallica song on the viola da terra. The team officially wrapped the production and sang happy birthday to him.

As the team heads into post-production in the coming weeks, the final assets were organized and completed at the hotel. Now, the team gets to enjoy a free day tomorrow after an intense week of shooting on the beautiful islands.
