We began day two with a very important interview with one of our story subjects, Rafael Carvalho, the master of the Viola da Terra.
Starting the day off strong with a great breakfast, of course, at our hotel here in Ponta Delgada with gorgeous, sunny weather. We then made our way onto the bus to travel to the Fajã de Baixo, a civil parish, where we met with Rafael Carvalho. Here, we split into teams working on A and B cameras shooting the main interview and the other group gathering establishing shots outside.
While we were there, we got to learn more in depth about the Viola da Terra and why it is so special to the Azores and Rafael himself. He provided such beautiful and heart-warming responses to the interview questions where we all laughed, and even cried.
This instrument is vital to this story and to these people here in the Azores; it was clear how special it is when we got to hear Rafael playing a mix of his own composed songs and other, more traditional songs on the Viola da Terra for ourselves.
After wrapping on our shoot with Rafael, our tour guide Bento took us to a garden area and town square called Ribeira Grande, where we all enjoyed our boxed lunches from the hotel or ate at a local cafe. We explored some cool shops around the square as well like the local chocolate shop! Once we finished we got back into our groups and split off with half going to a museum to film and the rest of us filmed B-roll around in the town square.
Once we were wrapped, we started our journey back to our hotel but took a quick pit stop to visit some cows and get drone footage of them and the luscious green fields they graze on.
